Mike White, the chairman and owner of Rite-Hite, a major Milwaukee manufacturer of industrial equipment, told employees in an email this week that all employees “should understand the personal consequences to them of having our tax rates increase dramatically if President Obama is re-elected, forcing taxpayers to fund President Obama’s future deficits and social programs (including Obamacare), which require bigger government.”
The email stunned some employees. One employee said he felt threatened by the email. “It’s a good company, but for this to come out, it’s absurd,” the employee said.
It’s more than absurd, it’s outrageous. It might be perfectly legal for employers to tell their employees how to vote, but that doesn’t make it right—and I’m pretty sure most Americans feel the same way.
Don’t forget, this isn’t an isolated incident. In fact, earlier this year Mitt Romney encouraged business owners to tell their employees how they should vote. That’s exactly what happened in this case.
As hard as it’s been to figure out what Mitt Romney really believes, the one thing he’s been consistent about is that he believes boss knows best. He think bosses should tell their employees how to vote and he thinks bosses should be allowed to decide whether their employees get things like contraceptive coverage in their health care plans. In Mitt Romney’s world, these so-called “job creators” are at the center of the universe and the government should be run for their benefit because they are the heart of the economy.
I think Romney honestly believes that to be the case. The problem is that the real world doesn’t work that way. You can be the greatest businessman in the world, but if there isn’t enough demand for your product, you won’t have any customers. Without customers, you can’t make money. And if you’re not making money, it doesn’t matter how low your taxes are, you’re not going to create any jobs.
