ongoing ‘Worst Person in Congress’ competition
I really don’t know where Republicans dredged up their current freshmen class. But I imagine that somewhere in 2008 America, the world’s most boring circus closed down, releasing all their white-collar sideshow attractions into the wild. Then the Republican Party came by, flashed a little cash to lure them into an unused cattle truck, and dumped the whole lot of them in front of the doors of Congress. Get to it, boys!
Rep. Joe Walsh (R-StopCallingMeADeadbeatDad-IL) is of that batch. He’s been in a bit of a meltdown lately, apparently because he realized that he actually had to get re-elected, it wasn’t just a one time thing. Or, equally likely, he’s always been this much of a toad, but nobody gave a damn until the state gave him a national platform from which he could broadcast his toadishness to the rest of us:
“The Democratic Party promises groups of people everything,” Walsh, a conservative freshman from suburban Chicago, said during a Schaumburg, Ill., speech caught on video provided by CREDO SuperPAC, an anti-tea party group. “They want the Hispanic vote, they want Hispanics to be dependent on government, just like they got African Americans dependent on government. That’s their game.”
Walsh goes on to say that civil rights activist Jesse Jackson “would be out of work if [African Americans] weren’t dependent on government.”
Those comments made a bit of a stir, since they are fucking stupid, but Joe Walsh is nothing if not aggressive in his stupidity. What the hell, let’s double down on that one, eh?
“All Jesse Jackson is trying to do is to keep African Americans down on some plantation,” he said on the “Big John & Amy” radio show Friday
If you want to know where Joe Walsh comes up with this stuff, let’s just say that the tea party has more than its fair share of proctologists in the ranks. Under this (common) conservative refrain, non-white Americans vote for Democrats not because the Republican Party is packed from center ring to the top of the highest tentpole with the casual racism of dipshits like Joe Walsh, but because the Democrats pay them off, enabling them to have the cushy lives of jobless luxury they currently enjoy. (You might also wonder why there is a constant conflation between poor Americans and black and brown Americans. I think it’s because Reagan proved all poor people are black, and all non-poor people are white.)
That there might be black Americans out there not “dependent on government” does not occur to them. That Jesse Jackson might have struck a chord because of pressing civil rights concerns, and not, say, because black Americans are lazy slobs, does not not occur to them. This allows the casual racist dipshits like Joe Walsh to opine that Republicans are not the racist ones, because it’s all the Democrats’ fault for wanting to feed poor people instead of letting them satiate themselves on the fumes of rich people’s tax cuts.
Really, this class of Republican freshmen is just rotten. Between the celebrations of raw greed as “American,” the constant racist pronouncements cloaked in assertions of how non-racist they are, the insistence that America be returned to Traditional Marriage, defined as the wife shutting her damn mouth and doing whatever her husband and/or father and/or nearest male authority figure has to say, I would hope we’ll be done with these people soon. I suspect not, however. Joe Walsh wouldn’t be saying racist things if he didn’t think there was a racist vote out there eager to hear it.
