Paul Ryan says his plan won’t hurt poor people

Rep. Paul Ryan went on The Today Show this morning. The news that most of the press paid attention to is whether he’s thinking about getting Mitt Romney’s VP nod and his trying to pick a school-yard fight with President Obama. The really remarkable part of his appearance is this:

“Do you acknowledge poor people will suffer under this budget?” [Ann] Curry asked Ryan.

“No,” Ryan responded…

Which is, by any way you do the bean-counting in his plan, an absolute lie. Sixty percent of the cuts in the Republican budget, at least $ 3.3 trillion worth, fall on low-income Americans.

  • $ 2.4 trillion in reductions from Medicaid and other health care for people with low or moderate incomes.
  • $ 134 billion in cuts to SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.
  • At least $ 463 billion in cuts in mandatory programs, such as farm programs and federal employee retirement.
  • At least $ 291 billion in cuts in low-income discretionary programs, like Head Start, child care, K-12 education, job training, Pell grants and services for the elderly.

And those are conservative estimates. That’s not even considering how much it will hurt seniors, particularly low-income ones, and put college completely out of reach for many.

Paul Ryan isn’t just a sociopath when it comes to the plight of low-income Americans, he’s a liar.
